EBT/CBTA training, TRI/TRE instructors

Every competency in context, at the moment it matters.

An EBT grade sheet links a competency grade to observable behaviours. When they came into play, and what the crew was busy with at that moment, stays in the instructor’s memory. PHASE puts them on the flight’s timeline: decision-making as time runs short, communication as the flight path degrades.

What an instructor deals with

Behaviours graded outside of time

“PSD, OB 6.7” on the grade sheet is correct, but incomplete. When should the decision have been revisited? What margin was left? The grade sheet has no time axis.

Debriefs that drift towards the person

“You should have…” comes easily once you know the outcome. The trainee defends instead of understanding, and the session turns into a verdict.

Different readings from one instructor to the next

Two instructors watch the same session and take away different things. Without a shared reference, the gap stays invisible and standardisation stays on paper.

What PHASE brings

1

EBT competencies placed in time

The nine competencies and their observable behaviours remain the framework. PHASE adds a time structure: when the competency is called on, when it shows, and what it does to the margin.

2

A discovery reading

The chart shows only what the crew had at that moment. The trainee is put back in the situation, without what the report knows in hindsight. Hindsight bias is limited.

3

A debrief about an object

Instructor and trainee look at the same surface and point at it. “You should have…” becomes “look at what was active there.”

4

Reading gaps made visible

The shared reading exercise proposes a reading of one behaviour; each instructor answers “agree”, “reservation” or “disagree”, and explains why. Differences between instructors become something to work on.

Demo

A diversion in degraded configuration.

A scenario built for TRI training. A slow hydraulic leak, a quickly decided diversion, a route shortened by ATC. The aircraft arrives high and fast, the PF continues hand-flying, and the captain intervenes in three steps before a hold puts the tasks back in sequence. Competencies in focus: COM 2.7, PSD 6.7, WLM 8.2 and 8.3.

What we can set up

For an operator, a training organisation or a team of instructors. The content starts from your EBT objectives, not from the method. Durations and group sizes are indicative.

  • A concordance workshop for instructors

Half a day, for 6 to 12 TRIs/TREs (indicative). Everyone reads the same chart, then compares their readings of the same behaviour. Differences become visible and can be discussed: hands-on standardisation work.

  • A constructed scenario for your programme

From your EBT programme and priorities: a scenario targeting one or two competencies, its chart and the behaviours at stake. It is labelled as constructed.

  • A real case prepared for your courses

A public report read through time, with a teaching version that shows one idea at a time.

  • Deliverables

The chart, printable in black and white; a record for every object; a shared-reading grid to run the session.
