The timeline shows; the record establishes; the analyst decides.
Jean-Gabriel Charrier is a retired airline transport pilot and Type Rating Instructor and Examiner (TRI/TRE). A flight instructor on gliders, aerobatics, instrument flying and transport aircraft, he has logged close to 10,000 hours of instruction, both across the French civil aviation authority’s flight schools and within airline operations.
He served as a flight instructor with the DGAC training services, then as Flight Inspector and Deputy Head of the Flight School Department at the Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile, where he took part in the European regulatory work on airline pilot licensing (FCL working group).
He holds a university diploma in human factors (Cognitive Competencies of Airline Pilots, Université Paris Descartes). With Stéphane Nicolas and Camilo Charron, he presented a first formalisation of crew performance analysis through the interaction between pilot and operational context at HCI-Aero 2016, Paris, 14–16 September (not published in the proceedings; HAL hal-02468273). According to the 2016 paper, the model, then called OOPS, was used in training for two years and was employed by trainers with 240 French Air Force instructor pilots.
He continues this work with PHASE, developing its reference corpus and its applications.
He is the author, in French, of “L’intelligence du pilote” (2011), “Manuel facteurs humains pour les vélivoles” (2012), “Manuel facteurs humains pour les libéristes” (with X. Bévant, 2012) and “Comment devenir un bon pilote — trucs & astuces” (JPO, 2017).
